Language and Culture Beyond Boundaries

The School of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics (SOLAL) offers students opportunities to explore new languages or build on existing skills. Majors and minors can choose from courses in literary and cultural studies, business applications, linguistics, and second language acquisition. Each program blends classroom learning with immersive activities like theatre, symposia, concerts, trips, conversation groups, and study abroad opportunities. Units such as Classical Studies, French Studies, German Studies, Italian Studies, and Spanish and Hispanic Studies provide a comprehensive education in language and culture, preparing students for global engagement.

Classical and Modern Cultures Studies

Classical Studies is the study of cultural achievements of the ancient Greeks and Romans from the earliest records to the Middle Ages. Their development of critical thinking, political organization, and the arts was of the greatest importance in forming the cultural tradition of the West.

French Studies

Studying French opens doors to diverse opportunities, including exploring Francophone literature (Quebec, France, Africa, and the Caribbean), developing skills in second-language teaching, engaging in literary translation, and understanding cultural interconnections.
