Course objectives:
This course will examine European films in a socio-political context. It will focus on the interaction between aesthetic and narrative choices, and the political and cultural conditions in Europe. The topics to be discussed in the course will center on major movements in European film, such as Italian Neo-Realism and the French New Waves, film genre, the representation of gender, national and ethnic identity, European versus Hollywood filmmaking, national and transnational cinema.

Learning outcomes:
Contextualize films within specific European socio-political and cultural environments.
Familiarize with film analysis in relation to genre, film movements, issues of gender, national and ethnic identity.
Acquire knowledge about a series of critical and theoretical approaches to film.
Gain technical and critical vocabulary with which to discuss film in general.
Develop critical and creative thinking, analytical skills and intercultural communicative competencies.
