Description:
This course provides an introduction to French-Canadian and Quebec literature and society from the seventeenth century to the present. It covers a lot of ground. Major genres, including the novel, poetry, theatre and the essay, will be studied from chronological and thematic points of view. In the lectures, facts of Quebec history and culture will be explored through the use of various media and facilitated discussion.
In the seminars, students will delve further into the readings from the course textbook, participate in various activities which enhance verbal and written skills, and deepen their knowledge of Quebec culture.
Learning outcomes:
By the end of this course, successful students will be able to:
*identify and compare the major literary genres and artistic movements that have emerged within Quebec from the early days of New France to the present through reading authentic texts.
*Describe and interpret major historical and cultural events which have shaped Quebec and French-Canadian society through individual assignments and facilitated discussion.
*be able to place a given text within an historical, ideological and aesthetic context and to appreciate its importance relative to other cultural productions.
*be able to articulate several ways in which Québec is different from the rest of Canada
* have gained practical experience in literary analysis and methodology by writing compositions in French.
* have increased your written and oral vocabulary in French and have greater facility in expressing abstract ideas in French.
