Masters in French Studies
French Studies at the University of Guelph offers a Masters in French Studies which reflects the areas of research of its professors. These areas of specialty fall into two broad categories:
-
The language in its context (literary translation, socio-linguistics and French as a Second Language (FSL) pedagogy)
-
Politics and aesthetics of French literature (Québec, French, African and Caribbean literature, and intermediality)
Students take a minimum of six courses and write a major research paper, supervised by a faculty adviser. Each student will also participate in a two week practicum in a francophone environment, an opportunity which is unique to the program at the University of Guelph.
Why do a masters?
The masters program offers an opportunity to specialize in a field of your choice and to undertake a relatively autonomous research project. During your participation in the program you will not only to deepen your knowledge, but also develop your research skills, independence and professionalism. As well, you will have the opportunity to apply your theoretical knowledge in practical contexts during your research and practicum.
Is it a good choice for me?
Here are a few questions that you can ask yourself to help determine if a masters is a good choice for you.
Is there a field of research in which I would like to deepen my knowledge?
Can I work independently?
What is my motivation for undertaking a masters? To find a job? For interest's sake?
