About the Department of Chemistry
For over 150 years, the Department of Chemistry has worked to build a legacy of chemical education, innovation, and discovery.
In the early days of the University's history, the topics of chemistry were widely taught with a focus on improving agricultural practices and improving life. Fast forward to today, research in chemistry at the University of Guelph continues to play a pivotal role with the same goal of improving life by utilizing our chemistry knowledge to solve an array of complex world problems. From developing a clearer understanding of our past by studying the origins of life, to looking to the future by synthesizing the building blocks for quantum-based computing, the Department of Chemistry is at the forefront of chemical research.
Land Acknowledgement
We learn, teach, and work on the traditional lands of the Attawandaron, Anishinaabek, and Haudenosaunee peoples and on the treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit. This place has been home to these nations for thousands of years, and continues to be home to many First Nations, Inuit and Métis people today. All who live and work here have a continuing responsibility for stewardship of this land for future generations.
As scientists and educators, we acknowledge the extensive impact of colonialism on the Indigenous peoples. We must endeavor to expand our understanding of Indigenous knowledge, culture and history. We must then use this understanding to move towards and engage in allyship with our Indigenous colleagues and neighbours and elevate the lived experience of all.
Our Programs
Within the Department of Chemistry, we offer 3 undergraduate degree programs: Biological and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Chemistry, and Biomedical Toxicology. Within each of these programs, you will gain hands on experience with in-person labs starting in your first year and a co-op option for each degree.
Thinking of gaining practical skills through grad work? Work closely with our top professors to gain a Masters or PhD in chemistry and/or with a collaborative specialization in toxicology.
