Text analytics have advanced significantly with techniques such as entity extraction and characterization, topic and opinion analysis, and sentiment and emotion extraction, and so on. But, text visualization has advanced much more slowly. The best known technique is the tag cloud: which doesn't convey much data. Reframing visualization techniques for text reveals many new ways to visualize with text. This presentation will provide an overview of these new ways to visualize text, in addition to examples from research and industry.

Speaker: Dr. Aaron Williams Abstract: In 1677 Fabian Stedman published a book on bell-ringing called Campanalogia. This book described a pattern of permutations which came to be known as plain changes to bell ringers and the Steinhaus-Johnson-Trotter algorithm for mathematicians and computer scientists.

Why Participate in 3MT? 3MT is a university-wide competition for graduate students in which participants present their research, creative activity, and its wider impact in 3 minutes or less to a panel of non-specialist judges. The challenge is to present complex research in an engaging, accessible and compelling way, using only one slide.

The 8th Annual Guelph Tech Showcase will be held on Thursday, January 31st from 6:30-8:30pm, in the Summerlee Science Complex Atrium. This event is open to all students within the following 4 majors: Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering and Engineering Systems & Computing.
