The Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) is a world leader in advancing veterinary science, learning and research with a mission to improve the lives and health of animals, people and our planet.  The Manager, Human Resources will support and lead HR activities in OVC’s four academic units and a range of research centers and institutes along with the OVC Health Sciences Centre (HSC) where specialized professionals and technical staff provide leading edge care in a veterinary teaching hospital environment.  The Manager will work collaboratively with key stakeholders to ensure organizational effectiveness and ongoing improvement to operational systems and processes while ensuring OVC’s HR priorities address the college’s mission, vision and program goals and promote a healthy organizational culture. 

Reporting to the Associate Director, Administration and Operations, and working in partnership with the University of Guelph’s Human Resources division and as a member of a dynamic administrative management team in OVC’s Integrated College Services (ICS) model, the Manager will play a critical role in the development and implementation of organizational HR strategies, improving process efficiencies, and ensuring they are applied consistently across the college. These strategies include the improvement of systems and processes to better support HR activities including those related to: business process efficiency and organizational planning; recruitment, selection and retention; information flow and management; performance management; payroll and time reporting. As a member of the ICS administrative management team, this position is a key champion for continuous improvement, particularly through leveraging technology to reduce inefficiency, improve data quality, and improve service delivery.

As an immediate priority, the Manager will play a critical role in the development and integration of OVC’s HR systems and processes as the University transitions to a new Human Resources Management System (HRMS: Gryphons at Work). The new HRMS is an important initiative that will advance modernization U of G’s systems and processes, as well as allowing OVC to leverage employee data in a more strategic manner. The Manager will be the business owner of OVC’s current time and attendance platform and will participate in strategic planning and leadership to facilitate the transition period to the new HRMS (SAP) system, including being the key driver for OVC for future-dated integrations and updates (e.g., time entry and attendance capabilities).

Key priorities of this position include:

  • Providing ongoing HR support and guidance within the college and the HSC
  • Leading improved HR management reporting, information flow, business process and organizational planning
  • Participating in strategic planning to transition, integrate and leverage the new HRMS
  • Facilitating change while consistently advocating for a positive workplace
  • Partnering with stakeholders to assess progress, address challenges and identify opportunities
  • Supervising 2 full-time positions that support HR and payroll operations for OVC (approximately 850 employees and 1,300 appointments)

Requirements of the position include:

  • An undergraduate degree in HR management or business administration combined with at least four years of relevant HR experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Completion of or working towards a CHRP or CHRL designation will be considered an asset.
