The University of Guelph Campus Safety Office is currently accepting applications from motivated, committed and community-oriented individuals for the role of Special Constable. As a Special Constable, you foster a sense of safety and inclusion through open dialogue with all campus stakeholders, as well as identifying initiatives that address the root causes of crime and disorder. You build and strengthen relationships between Special Constables and the members of the University community, by participating in programs and events that foster community service objectives, and by performing your duties professionally and courteously while ensuring the safety and security for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

General duties of this position include:

  • Enforcing criminal and provincial statutes; city bylaws; University policies and regulations.
  • Performs foot, bicycle, and mobile patrols on campus.
  • Performs traffic and crowd monitoring duties during special events.
  • Conducting criminal, provincial and university policy investigations.
  • Investigates crime-related occurrences on campus.
  • Prepare and complete notes and reports using CSO software.
  • Handling and categorizing lost/found and stolen property.
  • Provides crime prevention and safety programs to the University community.
  • Responds to emergency calls for service and assists with managing the management of these types of calls.
  • Other assigned duties as required.

Requirements of the position:

  • College Diploma, University Degree, or Ontario Police College (or equivalent) required and experience in a police/security environment will be considered an asset.
  • Required current and valid certifications at time of application:
    • Standard First Aid and Level "C" CPR Certificate
    • OACP certificate in good standing
    • Non-probationary class “G” driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record
  • Able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Excellent conflict resolution and negotiation skills.
  • Requires a high degree of tact and diplomacy when faced with various campus situations.
  • Must be self-motivated and work both within a team environment and at times with limited direct supervision.
  • Must demonstrate sensitivity toward the cultural diversity of the campus community.
  • Must be able to exercise discretion and confidentiality.

  2. A current copy of a Ministry of Transportation Statement of Driving Record (a 3-year uncertified Driver's record can be requested online from Service Ontario)
  3. Standard First-Aid Certificate, Level "C" CPR Certificate.

Successful candidates must also provide completed hearing and vision assessment forms as per OACP, as well as pass a fitness test using the Ontario Police Fitness Award guidelines, https://pfpo.org/ontario-police-fitness-pin-award-proqram/. Candidates selected following initial interview must successfully pass a background check and psychological suitability assessment for final selection for employment.

The successful candidate must be able to work rotational shift work, including night shift, weekends, and holidays.
