Dr. Shayan Sharif has been appointed interim vice-president, research & innovation at the University of Guelph. In this role, Sharif will lead the development and implementation of research endeavours, strategic planning and policy framework at the University and provide strategic leadership to the University’s Office of Research.
“I am incredibly honoured to take on this position and oversee the thriving research ecosystem we have here at U of G,” said Sharif. “Acting in the role earlier this year allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of our strengths and recognize key areas that hold growth potential. I look forward to strengthening relationships with our stakeholders and advancing our capacity to mobilize research discoveries into impactful solutions that improve lives.”
Sharif has been acting in this role since August 2024. Before that, he served as interim associate vice-president (research, agri-food partnership) since 2023.
As Sharif takes on his new role, Dr. Rebecca Hallett has been appointed interim associate vice-president (research, agri-food partnership) and will take over the portfolio to lead the Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance, a collaboration between the Government of Ontario and the University of Guelph, and provide strategic management and support to the largest single research agreement at the University. Hallett will also oversee the University’s Laboratory Services Division and maintain key relationships with numerous public and private sector partners.
“I am honoured to step into this role and excited at the opportunity to help support and champion the Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance. The Alliance has been critical to my own research program throughout my whole career, and I know the tremendous value it brings to the University and to Ontario,” said Hallett.
Prior to this, Hallett served as associate dean, research and graduate studies for six years in the Ontario Agricultural College, and she is also a professor in the School of Environmental Sciences. Her research focuses on agricultural pests, including invasive insects, and aims to develop integrated pest management programs for vegetable and field crops to reduce pesticide use and protect beneficial species.
This news follows that of Dr. Charlotte Yates’ retirement announced earlier in November. During the transition period while the University conducts a formal search for its next president, Dr. Rene Van Acker will assume the role of interim president and vice-chancellor at U of G.s
Sharif, Hallett and Van Acker will remain in their new roles until the presidential search is complete.
