Dr. Paul Hebert, a professor who holds a Canada Research Chair, Tier 1, and is the director of the Centre for Biodiversity Genomics, was awarded the Benjamin Franklin Medal for Earth and Environmental Science for 2024.
Hebert received the medal for creating DNA barcoding, a technology that identifies species using a small segment of DNA, like how a barcode identifies a product in a supermarket.
This technology has made species identification faster, more accurate, and less expensive than previous methods and is now being used globally to catalogue all life on earth.
The Franklin Institute, which promotes science and innovation, has been awarding these medals since 1824 to influential figures in science and technology.
Hebert is the fourth Canadian to receive this honour.
