Angel Wings

Mycelium networks represent the vegetative stage of the mushroom lifecycle, which generally emerge as fuzzy white strands of fungal tissue. Phenotypic variations between mycelium colonies are common and can form distinct patterns. In this photo, Psilocybe allenii mycelium has grown from a central inoculation point. The pattern of mycelium resembles angel wings. The University of Guelph is conducting studies to characterize different metabolite profiles of Psilocybe mushrooms, which is of interest to research fields related to medicine, chemistry, and agriculture.
