Teosinte is the grassy ancestor of corn. Teosinte relies on short days to flower and the flowering process stops when grown in long days. This plant was grown in short days for several months until reproductive tassels were visible and then was moved to long day conditions. Changing the lighting regime created leaf development within the tassels where the pollen producing anthers are normally found. As a result, this plant has a 'Crazy Top' phenotype that resembles graduate students' bad hair days.
