Savannah sparrows return to Kent island each summer to breed after wintering in the southern United States. Since 1987, all sparrows within the island's research site are caught using mist nets, and new birds are banded. Each bird is given a unique ID band and 3 colour bands, so the researchers can visually monitor individual birds throughout the summer.
