Tremaine Speaker Series for Women in Science 2024

From October 15-17, 2024, the University of Guelph’s School of Computer Science welcomed Dr. Joanna McGrenere to campus for three days as part of its annual Tremaine Speaker Series featuring Women in Science.

McGrenere is a Professor and Co-Head of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Her research specializes in Human-Computer Interaction, with a focus on designing personalized user interfaces, as well as developing interactive systems for diverse user populations, including older adults, people with impairments and children. Joanna’s research has strong ties to industry, having been an IBM Visiting Scientist and received research support from organizations such as Microsoft, Samsung, Google and more.

While at U of G, McGrenere spoke at a series of four U of G and community events about topics including her work in Human-Computer Interaction to career advancement and pathways in computer science in Canada.

More than 30 attendees joined the final Tremaine series talk, a panel on the role of diversity and shaping the future of computer science.
Moderated by Dr. Wenjing Zhang, panelists included Drs. Dan Gillis, McGrenere, Scott, and Graham Taylor.
