The Administrative Assistant to the Directors of Interdisciplinary Programs provides support to the Guelph Institute of Development Studies (GIDS) and the Social Practice and Transformational Change (SOPR) PhD program.

The Guelph Institute for Development Studies (GIDS) houses the International Development Studies (IDS) Program which is comprised of an interdisciplinary undergraduate degree within the Bachelor of Arts, as well as a graduate-level Collaborative Specialization with participation from over 20 graduate programs in the university. The IDS undergraduate program has approximately 131 majors and 22 minors, while the Collaborative Specialization has approximately 20 students.

The Social Practice and Transformational Change PhD program promotes interdisciplinary examination and critical theorization of social practice and its relationship to policy, programs and transformational change. Students design and implement practice-based research projects and research-based practices, as well as develop principled, ethical and sustainable frameworks for collaborative, community-engaged initiatives. The program has approximately 20 students.

The Administrative Assistant to the Directors of Interdisciplinary Programs is responsible for the efficient and timely operation of the administrative office which supports the Directors, faculty, sessional instructors, staff and students in all of their endeavors. This involves multi-tasking, excellent organizational and problem-solving skills, the ability to prioritize and self-manage, adherence to multiple deadlines, liaising with multiple departments and programs across campus, providing information to faculty, staff and students regarding all aspects of academic and administrative procedures and policies. 

Requirements of the position include:

  • Two (2) year college diploma (undergraduate degree preferred) and at least two (2) years administrative experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong organizational, communication and writing skills
  • Professional judgment, tact, diplomacy; a high level of professionalism, and the ability to self-manage and work both pro-actively and re-actively under tight timeframes and completing priorities
  • Experience with Graduate Program Coordination & Administrative Support
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), online meeting platforms (Zoom, MS Teams, etc), FRS, and other University–based information systems including HR
  • Previous experience or familiarity with financial management or human resources administration would be considered an asset
