Reporting to the Manager, Global Pre-arrival Support (GPS), and working closely with the GPS Advisors, the primary role of the position is to act as a central point of contact and support for new incoming international students and their families.

They will provide programming support to students in navigating the complex processes, steps, and requirements that they face as they move from admission, enrolment, arrival, and through semester one. This work involves designing, implementing, and assessing events, presentations, workshops, and population-specific programming, both in-person and online.

The Coordinator is responsible for building strong relationships with students and internal stakeholders and to work collaboratively across units. They will liaise regularly with individuals and groups across campus to develop a programming infrastructure to support work and information flow between new international students and other stakeholders.

The Coordinator represents the department at a range of institutional events, meetings, and programs, and contributes to the strategic direction and day-to-day operations of a variety of areas within Global Pre-Arrival Support unit, including participation in the development and implementation of actions plans and associated budgets for the unit.

They bring experience in International Education or Student Support Services to the position and combine it with personalized care and dedication to student success.

To be successful in this role, the incumbent is required to have:

  • An undergraduate degree in international relations or development, education, business, marketing, communications, or related field coupled with two years of progressive experience in international student services.
  • Experience in needs assessment, devising strategies, program design, learning outcome development, program coordination and evaluation.
  • Experience communicating with and supporting individuals who may be distressed, distraught, or in crisis.
  • Strong interpersonal and intercultural skills, with evidence of successfully building and strengthening relationships and partnerships.
  • Evidence of relationship building and collaboration amongst internal partners to facilitate communication, engagement, and coordinated approaches.
  • Working knowledge of the complexity of society structures, political dynamics, economics, cultural norms and customs, education experiences, intersecting identities, and religious environments of incoming international students and the impact they have on decision-making.
  • Proven ability to respect and maintain confidentiality of student data and records.
  • Experience or familiarity with CRM (Customer Relationship Management) and student enrolment databases.
  • A strong aptitude in written, verbal, and non-verbal communication.
  • Intermediate level Microsoft 365, including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required.
  • A thorough understanding of the University of Guelph’s academic programs and student support services is preferred, and a demonstrated knowledge of Canadian immigration policies, and how they pertain to incoming international students would be considered an asset.
  • Qualification as a Regulated International Student Immigration Advisor (RISIA) would be considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with English language pathway programs and English language proficiency admission requirements considered an asset.
